Weekly Healthy Chicks in The Community Feature: Paige Lawrence From Gluten Free Ghouls

Happy Friday everyone, and it sure is a happy Friday indeed! Not only is it time for weekend vibes, but I’m also shipping off for a family vacation to South Carolina. My husband, sister, brother-in-law, mom and dad are all hopping into a giant van together to drive down to warmer weather and beach days. I could totally use a big dose of that Vitamin D, and couldn’t be more excited to just unplug, relax and chill out with the sand between my toes.

OK, enough bragging, we’re onto this week’s feature for Healthy Chicks in the Community, a weekly series highlighting rockstar Girl Bosses doing their thang in the wellness community. I’m super psyched to introduce you to Author, Illustrator and all-around genuine soul Paige Lawrence. Funny enough, I met Paige through my dad who went up to her at a Starbucks to tell her about my blog. (If you know my dad, this is totally not a surprise at all, he’s my biggest fan!)

I’m so glad we connected, because I quickly found out that Paige is the Author and Illustrator behind children’s book series Gluten Free Ghouls, educating and spreading awareness around food allergies in a playful way! Her books are super fun reads, and I still can’t believe she does all of the detailed illustration herself. Can you talk about talent?! On that note, I’m honored to introduce you to Paige herself, who is sure to leave you feeling inspired and likely craving gluten-free goodies.

NAME: Paige Lawrence

DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS/LINE OF WORK: Author/Illustrator

WHERE YOU LIVE: Connecticut

HOW YOU SERVE THE COMMUNITY THROUGH YOUR WORK: Donating time and proceeds to charitable organizations such as Sunshine Kids and The Hole in The Wall Gang. Also, my Gluten-Free Ghouls’ books help to spread awareness about gluten intolerance, celiac disease, and food allergies and help children to cope with the everyday struggles that occur while living with these health issues.

NUMBER ONE PASSION OUTSIDE THE JOB: Writing and illustrating are definitely my passions, so I’m very lucky to say I make a living doing what I love, but I also enjoy photography. I absolutely love capturing the perfect picture!

INTENTIONS/GOALS YOU HAVE FOR YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 3 YEARS: I will definitely be writing and illustrating another book, or two. I would like to increase my number of appearances at schools and events, and begin producing plush toys, t-shirts, and other products associated with my books. Ultimately, the more smiles and happiness that I can bring to children (teens and adults, too) with my books, the better.

ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D TELL YOUR CHILDHOOD SELF: Always have complete confidence in yourself and believe that you can do absolutely anything that you set your mind to. The things that you are most afraid of doing, that will help you succeed, are not as hard as you may think, so just jump in and never let fear hold you back. You’ve got this!

FOODS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL ALIVE & BRING THE MOST JOY: I have to go with gluten-free foods for this one. The healthier I eat, the better I feel and the more energy I have, so I would have to say fruits, vegetables, and anything that isn’t processed or loaded with sugar.

SONG THAT MOVES YOU: I love all kinds of music, so it’s hard to pick just one, but songs that have motivated me throughout my life are definitely “No Easy Way Out” from Rocky IV; “Lose Yourself,” Eminem; and “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me,” Cher. Movies that inspire me: “The Pursuit of Happyness,” “8 Mile,” “Magic Beyond Words” (J.K. Rowling’s story), “Joy,” and “Walt Before Disney,” just to name a few.

THREE FAB THINGS ABOUT YOU:
1) I have been told by an executive editor at a well-known publishing company who reviewed my children’s book, that while children’s book publishers don’t like rhyming books (I was surprised, too), she liked my rhyme. That was a great moment.
2) I can decorate really well.
3) I am a fabulous fashionista!

FAVORITE BODY PART & WHY: My eyes. I can’t do my job without them.

I GET MY INSPIRATION FROM: Kids and adults who share their personal stories about gluten intolerance, celiac disease, and multiple food allergies with me. They remind me how important it is to continue educating others with my books.

EXERCISE THAT MAKES YOU SHINE: Dancing

SOMETHING IN YOUR “WELLNESS TOOLBOX” YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: Exercise

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Creating children’s books that make children laugh and smile while teaching them the importance of eating healthy.

FEMALE LEADER(S) YOU LOOK UP TO: I have to say my mother for this one. She may not rule the world, but she unselfishly spends countless hours making beautiful quilts for sick and disabled children and donates them to hospitals. She leads with her heart. It is so admirable.

IF YOU COULD PICK ONE PERSON TO HAVE DINNER WITH, WHO WOULD IT BE & WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE THEM: J.K. Rowling, or from the past, Walt Disney. As far as what I’d make them, well, I would “make them” go out to dinner with me because I’m not the greatest cook. ha ha.

GO-TO MANTRA OR INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE: I have several of these and I read them often. Here are just a few: “Never give up,” “If you can dream it, you can do it” (Walt Disney), “A pencil and a dream can take you anywhere,” “99 percent of failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses,” “Let the beauty of what you love be what you do,” and “She believed she could, so she did.”

MESSAGE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHER HEALTHY CHICKS: I believe that each one of us has something wonderful to contribute to this world, and you never know who you might be inspiring or helping along the way, so follow your dreams and share your gifts. You’ll be glad that you did. I promise. 🙂

Big thank you to Paige for taking part in this week’s Healthy Chicks in the Community feature! Be sure to check out her website at GlutenFreeGhouls.com
