Weekly Healthy Chicks in the Community Feature: Sarah Gaines of Fit University

Happy Friday, babes! I’ve had such a magical week focusing on connecting with other women — from tapping it back with my bestie at SoulCycle to attending the MetroWest Conference for Women yesterday. The energy I have soaked up this week has been truly incredible!

In the spirit of continuing those good vibes, I’m thrilled to introduce you to this week’s feature on Healthy Chicks in the Community, a weekly series highlighting rockstar Girl Bosses doing their thang in the wellness community and beyond.

Founder of Fit University Sarah Gaines is totally crushing it when it comes to bringing the wellness movement to the masses — in particular to college students. I love her energy, positivity and dedication to promoting health and wellness to students and young professionals (which is so needed in the world). I’ll let Sarah take it away from here!

NAME: Sarah Gaines

DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS/LINE OF WORK: I’m in the business of helping others (specifically college students + young professionals) live healthy + happy.

WHERE YOU LIVE: Boston, MA

HOW YOU SERVE THE COMMUNITY THROUGH YOUR WORK: I’m the founder of Fit University, a free community for college students who are passionate about living healthy. Fit University provides the framework for students to build their own free communities on their specific college campuses while also providing tools + resources to help them create and sustain healthy habits.

NUMBER ONE PASSION OUTSIDE THE JOB: Dancing…though I don’t do it nearly as much as I should.

INTENTIONS/GOALS YOU HAVE FOR YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 3 YEARS: In the next 3 years, I want to be teaching fitness + speaking to people about healthy/happy living in meaningful spaces. As in, not just teaching fitness in fitness studios or speaking in workplaces. I taught a workout at a young professionals retreat and it was incredibly rewarding. I’d love to do more events like that. In the next 3 years, I want to make myself known as a promoter of health + wellness for college students and young professionals via events, speaking engagements, and my writing.

ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D TELL YOUR CHILDHOOD SELF: Keep going.

FOODS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL ALIVE & BRING THE MOST JOY: Ahh too many! Sushi, greek salad with salmon, croissants, sangria!

SONG THAT MOVES YOU: Cerebral. This song is intense – prepare yourself.

THREE FAB THINGS ABOUT YOU: 1) I find joy in the smallest things in life, 2) I often sing and/or dance without even realizing it, 3) I give good hugs!

FAVORITE BODY PART & WHY: My butt. Yeah I said it!! It’s big, strong, perfectly round, and helps me squat 225.

I GET MY INSPIRATION FROM: The #fitufam. That’s the students who make up the Fit University community. They’re amazing. Check them out.

EXERCISE THAT MAKES YOU SHINE: Slow lowers. Come take my class to see what I’m talking about 😉

SOMETHING IN YOUR “WELLNESS TOOLBOX” YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: Meditation + heavy lifting. My yin + yang.

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: I used to suffer with obsessive eating + exercise habits, binge eating, and negative self talk. I’m proud to say I have completely reconstructed my habits to moderate ones and have come to love and accept my body for the strong one it is!

FEMALE LEADER(S) YOU LOOK UP TO: Brené Brown. Have you watched her talk on the power of vulnerability?

IF YOU COULD PICK ONE PERSON TO HAVE DINNER WITH, WHO WOULD IT BE & WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE THEM: My Nanny (that’s my mom’s mom!). I never got to meet her but apparently I’m her reincarnated. I’d probably make pasta + turkey meat sauce…it’s my speciality!

GO-TO MANTRA OR INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE: Happiness happens when you learn to expect nothing and appreciate everything.

MESSAGE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHER HEALTHY CHICKS: You’re strong, you’re beautiful, you’re great. Fitness looks and feels different for everyone – it’s all about finding what works best for you.
