I am Back: 16 Travel Lessons I Learned This Week
Good morning and happy Monday! Well I guess it’s never really a happy Monday, but I hope you’re at least hanging in there. I myself am trying to hang in there, despite my sniffles and congestion, coffee withdrawal, and desire to be back on the road again with The Boy.
I just got back from a seven day road trip with my boyfriend which consisted of flying down to Orlando, enjoying two days in the Sunshine state, then driving two days up to New York, two days in New York and then a bus back to Massachusetts. Talk about a lot of traveling.
We had a wonderful time together, laughing, eating and singing our faces off. I’m sad it’s all over, but definitely happy to get back to my old routine up here in Boston. While I wasn’t working or studying on this vacay, there are definitely a few things I learned while on the road. Here’s a few of ‘em:
1. The little things like holding hands during the car ride, splitting fish ‘n’ chips on the patio at 11 p.m. or making each other laugh so hard you’re going to pee your pants is far more romantic to me than expensive jewelry or flowers.
2. There is nothing so relaxing as sipping white zin by the pool with Glamour in hand.
3. Getting a truck driver to honk his horn is much more difficult now that I’m older. We were rejected 5 times in a row, and one guy gave me the “get outta here” hand.
4. When Rachel can’t get her morning dose of coffee, simply stay away…stay far, far away. I’m serious.
5. Living with a boy for a week straight is much easier than I thought it’d be.
6. Living out of a bag for a week straight is much more difficult than I thought it’d be – where are those cute undies I packed and why can I only find one flip flop?
7. Buffet-style dinners can really get the best of you…how can you not go up for at least seconds?
8. On that note, eating out in general can really get the best of you. The one thing I missed most while on vacation is buying my own food and cooking for myself.
9. When traveling, always have healthy snacks on hand like trail mix, fruit, or protein bars unless you want to deal with two hungry, over-tired grouches.
10. Taco Bell’s fresco crunchy beef tacos aren’t half bad if you’re trying to eat semi-healthy on the road. I ordered two at only 150 calories a pop.
11. However, sometimes it’s worth the splurge, like the dark chocolate Edy’s ice cream we enjoyed at Sweet Tomatoes. Yes, dark chocolate soft-served ice cream. It was as decadent as it sounds.
12. A travel buddy makes traveling so much more delightful. Think: watching your luggage when you have to pee, holding onto your tickets, and protecting you from creepers.
13. If you want to keep your travel mate happy, give him a scalp massage. In Jason’s words: “I used to go to the school nurse all the time to get ‘checked’ for lice and you are much hotter than she was.”
14. Lack of exercise can turn you into a psychotic, crazy woman. When I work out, I am calmer hence happier hence more sane. This I have found to be true. Boy am I excited to get back to the gym and re-connect with some good ol’ Core Fusion.
15. When you are on vacation with your boyfriend for a week straight, getting over your bathroom fears is a must. There’s nothing pretty about a constipated girlfriend.
16. If you really want to learn everything about a person, just drive coast to coast with them and you’ll definitely come close.
I’m just happy I made it all the way from Florida to upstate New York without breaking up ; ) hehe
What are your favorite travel tips? Do you have any embarrassing moments or disaster stories from going on vacation with a boyfriend? I’d love to hear!

ohh it sounds like you had a wonderful trip together, sans the constipation 😛
I definitely agree that staying active is a must, I need it even when I’m not sitting in a car for hours! 😛
