Got the Winter Blues? Time to Perk Up!

[source]

There’s been a hell of a lot of complaining here in Boston lately – not only is it due to the devastating Pats loss the other night, but for some reason Mother Nature doesn’t want to give us a break with the snow, and hypothermia-inducing weather. Seriously, it’s just not OK. But complaining and being Oscar the Grouches about it also is totally not OK either. Here are 7 little things to help perk you up in times of winter depression.

1. There are only 55 days until Spring! It’s true, I calculated it myself on my Calendar. That means birds chirping, flowers blooming and temps in the 50s and 60s isn’t that far away.

2. Valentine’s Day is coming up in a few weeks. For all of you V-Day haters, check out this awesome Anti-Valentine’s Day Bash put on by Boston Event Guide: The Flirt Fest! Tickets are only $20 for a pair or $15 a pop if you buy before Friday. Plus, you can have a little more fun with it by nominating your friends to be Boston’s Biggest Flirt.

If you’re a Valentine’s Day lover, then it’s your excuse to wear pink, red and white all … Read More!

Quotable Sunday On Life

I think we can all learn a little bit from this quote, as it’s something all of us can work on from time to time. I know I try not to take myself too seriously, because it takes all the fun away. Sometimes it’s best to just go for the ride and see what happens. Don’t overanalyze your relationship, try not to over-think your “life’s purpose,” and laugh at embarrassing moments…

Friday Faves

[source]

TGIF all my little healthy chickies! Since it’s Friday – and in the Twitter world Friday is always “Follow Friday” where you mention your favorite tweeters (um, is that what they’re called?) – I figured I’d go with the theme. Here are some of my favorites this week…enjoy!

Fave Website: My Secret Boston – This site is super cool and lets you in on all things secret, yet phenomenal in Boston. From fun places to eat to where to shop & drink, these people know their city! I particularly like the SEE+DO section and this activity especially caught my eye; who knew? You must take a peak if you haven’t yet!

Fave Song: “Magic” by B.O.B. & “Marry You” by Bruno Mars; these babies have really been getting me through my dreaded treadmill runs.

Fave Snack: Cheese ‘n’ crackers; I simply can’t stop eating them this week, as if I were a little kid again sitting at one of those plastic picnic tables! I must say…I’ve upgraded my cheese taste from string cheese to the more “classy” varieties. My new favorite is Dill Havarti from good ol’ Trader Joe’s.

Treadmill Woes Plus Gotta-Have-It Grilled Cheese

[source]

Ever since I started training for my half marathon, it seems Mother Nature is not on my side. Blizzards and wintery mixes make running outside more like an obstacle course gone wrong than an enjoyable exercise. Since I hate the treadmill so damn much, I even ran outside last weekend when I knew I shouldn’t have. I was dodging three-feet piles of snow, jumping over icy paths and slipping my way along the sidewalk. Not exactly safe, to say the least.

The fact of the matter is I hate the treadmill that much. I hate it so much that I texted my dad after my awful workout complaining to him just how much I hated it. He said, “Yup, the treadmill is hard. No adrenaline.” Exactly, I thought to myself. He also told me to check out “the gym dudes” for a distraction (hehe). However, as much as I hate it, I am making it a goal for myself to let go of all that hatred and attempt to embrace the evil little machine. So yesterday I went to the gym with a positive attitude ready to tackle my three-mile treadmill run. While it still was … Read More!

Hump Day Mood Enhancer

Seriously…seriously. I am real, live proof – yes, even though you can’t actually see me – that this remedy works time and time and again. Yesterday in particular it worked perfectly. You see, I had a lot on my mind so instead of panicking or sulking, I booked it to the gym for some intense cross training followed by steam room (the workout part). Hello, endorphins! I was feeling goooood.

Then my roommate came home, who is going through some very tough times right now. So instead of “talking about it” and making her even more upset, I suggested my #1 cure – Sex and the City ‘sodes! Within a few minutes, she was smiling and laughing again, and my mind was off all the bad things and on to “What is Carrie wearing?” and “How does Samantha do that?” (The Sex & The City segment)

After a couple hours of that, and some homemade dinner, I dabbled in some dark chocolate chips. Can you say yum? These puppies enhance my mood the second they enter my mouth…every single time. So go ahead, eat some chocolate; it won’t kill ya! (The chocolate bit).

Alas, after all … Read More!

The Road to My First Half Marathon

[source]

So if you’ve been reading my blog for the past few weeks, you’ve probably seen me mention that I’m training for a half marathon…that is my first half marathon ever. To this date, the farthest I’ve ran is a 10K back in September. But now I am taking it a step further, and am in the midst of training for the More /Fitness Women’s Half Marathon on April 3 in Central Park, NYC!

I wasn’t really planning on signing of for a half marathon; it just sorta happened. A friend of mine (thanks Pao!) posted the link on my Facebook wall, and at first I thought “HA, that’s crazy,” and went on with my day. Then I clicked on the link for shits ‘n’ giggles and immediately felt inspired. An all women’s race? Sponsored by More Magazine and Fitness Magazine? Right then and there I knew I had to do it.

I just dove right in, so I wouldn’t have time to look back. I ripped the band-aide off, entered my credit card number and did it. Sometimes in life, that’s the best way to get things done! I also convinced a few other friends … Read More!

Time to Tone the Tush!

[source]

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all have butts like that? I try not to compare myself to other women, but I gotta be honest: I’d die for her butt! Since I’ve finally gotten over caring about my weight, calories and number on the scale, my newest focus is toning the bod…most importantly the butt and the thighs. I’m happy with my stomach and my arms have some nice toneage, but butt/thighs/legs have always been my “trouble spots.” Hey, we all want to look good in boy shorts after all, right? If you’re looking to tone that cute lil booty of yours as well, check out these links I found surfing the web for fab toning workouts for the gluteus. Enjoy and let me know how it goes!

Quotable Sunday and Running…

This quote speaks true to many people, and especially hit hard for me this week as I am training for my first half marathon. Am I a professional runner? Nope. Am I a runner? You bet. Who ever thought two years ago I’d be running a half marathon? It just goes to show that you can do anything you set your heart on. So for all you runners out there- of all styles, shapes and sizes – enjoy!

7 Things About The Healthy Chick

So Allison over at The Picky Eating Rd tagged me as the Stylish Blogger Award, hence I must share seven things about myself you may not know. Here goes…

1. I am color blind, and get extremely confused between green, red and brown. So don’t judge me if I sometimes don’t match.

2. I went sky diving in New Zealand, and was shaking up until the moment I jumped, and then it wasn’t scary. I just let loose and enjoyed.

3. I went to college in Virginia and fell in love with Southern charm and friendly people…

4. …But not as much as I love the fast-paced city life that is Boston. I have lived here for a year and a half and absolutely adore it.

5. I’ve never had a “real” boyfriend up until now. I had a fake boyfriend in 8th grade who used to hold my clarinet case for me and walk me to the bus. We avoided each other in the cafe at lunch.

6. My natural hair color is brown (what it is now), though I’ve been blonde most of my life. That’s what happens when your mother owns a hair salon – experimenting!

7. … Read More!

The Journey to My Happy Weight Sans Dieting

The other day when I was home spending time with the family, I decided to step on the scale for old time’s sake. I couldn’t believe what I saw. I had lost a whopping 10 pounds from what I was a year and a half ago when I graduated college…by not even trying. I looked up at my dad and said “Wow, why do you think I’m the most fit I’ve ever been in my life? What do you think it is?” He agreed that I indeed looked different, in shape…and glowing. “I know what it is,” he said smirking. “You’re happier and less stressed and in loooooooveeeee,” he said, mocking me.

While I’m most definitely not in love, I have to say he’s right: I am extremely happy lately for a number of reasons. It’s like all of the sudden things in my life are starting to make sense and fall together.

Then this morning I had another big ‘wow’ moment. I slipped on a pair of skinny jeans that haven’t fit me in quite some time, and they slid right on. I felt good, real good.

This is awesome. I don’t have to count calories, watch what I Read More!
