Blast From the Past Series: Post 4 on the Hidden Benefits of Running

If you’ve  been keeping up with my blog, you know that I’m off to Florida with The Boy, then road-tripping back up the East Coast to drive his grandparent’s car back to NY. I’ll be gone a week straight (and felt like disconnecting from technology for a while) but also didn’t want to leave you all blog-less. Hence my idea to do a Blast From the Past series. Here is post # 4 on the hidden benefits of running…

[this post was originally published on October 11th 2010 as “The Hidden Benefits of Running: It’s More Than Burning off That Cake”]

I have to admit: up until this year I absolutely hated running, but I did it. I ran to lose weight, to burn off my dinner, and to look good in my bikini. I’d force myself to go on group runs with my roommates, even though every stride was absolutely painful. I hate this. But I have to keep going, I’d think to myself.

It wasn’t until this year that I began to enjoy running. The weekend of my grandmas funeral, I was filled with a bajillion emotions: anger, confusion, pain, rage, and I don’t know what … Read More!

Jen, you may take it from here…

Blast From the Past Series: Post 2 on Reaching Your Happy Weight

If you’ve  been keeping up with my blog, you know that I’m off to Florida with the boy, then road-tripping back up the East Coast to drive his grandparent’s car back to NY. I’ll be gone a week straight (and felt like disconnecting from technology for a while) but also didn’t want to leave you all blog-less. Hence my idea to do a Blast From the Past series. Here is post # 2 on reaching your “happy weight.” Enjoy…

[this post was originally published Jan. 13th 2011 as “The Journey to My Happy Weight Sans Dieting” ]

The other day when I was home spending time with the family, I decided to step on the scale for old time’s sake. I couldn’t believe what I saw. I had lost a whopping 10 pounds from what I was a year and a half ago when I graduated college…by not even trying. I looked up at my dad and said “Wow, why do you think I’m the most fit I’ve ever been in my life? What do you think it is?” He agreed that I indeed looked different, in shape…and glowing. “I know what it is,” he said smirking. “You’re … Read More!

Blast from the Past Series: Post 1 on Healthy Living

Good morning my lovely blog readers! If you’ve been keeping up with my latest posts, you’re probably aware I’m flying to Florida this afternoon with The Boy. I’ll be there for a few days, then will be road-tripping up the east coast to drive his grandparents car back up to NY for them. It’s kind of surreal because when we first met (almost 6 months ago), we did the reverse trip – drove the car down and flew back – and now several months later we’ll be doing the opposite. Anyway, I’ll be gone a week straight but don’t worry: I won’t leave you blog-less for a whole seven days. Instead I’ve decided to do a blast from the past series, re-posting an article a day on something I’ve written in the past. If you are new to my blog, it’ll be a good way to catch up, and if you’ve been reading forever, it’ll be a fun way to reminsice. Here is Post # 1 on Healthy Living. Enjoy & stay tuned in…

Quotable Sunday: On Finding Utter Happiness

This coming week, I’m going to focus very hard on finding harmony and balance in my life. Not over-analyzing everything. Not thinking too much about the future, nor too much about the past. On just going with the flow. I believe that if you let yourself think, do, and say as you please in the moment, you will ultimately find that place of harmony and happiness you’ve been looking for.

Weekly Faves: Road Trips, Turbo Shots, Yoga Lessons and More

[source]

Hello ladies! I had SUCH a busy week – filled with starting a new job, attending several events, picnic-ing and going out with the girls last night – that I totally forgot to post my weekly Friday Faves post. But don’t you worry: it’s here (even if it is a day late).

Road trips: I’m going on a road trip with The Boy to drive his grandparents car from FL back to NY. Yes, we are flying down to Florida, staying a few days and then road-tripping all the way back up the East coast. Some people hate long, drawn-out car rides. But I personally love them. I love making mixed CDs. I love asking random questions, and playing silly car ride games. I love rolling the windows down and running my hands through the breeze. I love singing…even though I have no tone AT ALL. I love checking out the scenery and stopping a random restaurants and hotels along the way. Road trips are the absolute greatest…I’m getting like a giddy school girl already just thinking about it!

My Yoga Teacher: No, I don’t have a crush on my yoga teacher. But I do love some … Read More!

Hump Day Lesson of the Day: On Bringing out Your Inner Barber

The other day when I was at work, I got a text from my boyfriend saying, “Feel like trying to cut my hair this week sometime? If you screw up, we can just buzz it.”

Cut his hair? First of all, how is he trusting me with that kind of thing? Second of all, me cutting hair? HA. Just because my mom owns a hair salon does not mean I have the special skills.

I thought about it for a second, then responded, “Suuureee, with a scissor or a buzzer?” “Both,” he threw right back at me. A few minutes and a few texts later I was signed up to cut my man’s hair. This could go really good, or really bad I thought. Plus, if I screw up it’s me who would have to deal with the heinous mess I had the ability to create. That’s the difference between guys and girls. I would NEVER, NEVER trust the boyfriend (nor anyone but my mom & a few others for that matter) with my precious locks.

Fast forward a few days and I was standing in his apartment bathroom with a clipper, scissors and a few combs. I was about … Read More!

Lots to Smile About and Easy Broccoli, Tomato and Pesto Pasta

Good afternoon ladies! Hope you all made it through the Monday blues, and now that it’s Tuesday have a smile on your face. Lately, I’ve been one smiley girl as I realize I have lots to be happy about: my relationship, my super sweet North End apartment (come September), my amazing friends whom I keep in touch with even when far away, my (sometimes crazy) family, the fact that I can buy coffee out again now that Lent is over (helllooo venti iced coffee from Starbucks) and the bag of Munson’s Chocolate The Easter Bunny i.e. my mom got me for Easter.

If you’re looking for another reason to smile, I suggest you try this super easy pasta dish I made the other night – perfect for a nice spring evening when you’re looking for something light, simple and delicious. I know how much we all HATE being bloated after an overwhelming amount of spaghetti, but this dish left me feeling satisfied, rather than uncomfortably full.

Easy Broccoli, Tomato & Pesto Pasta for One

-1/2 c. whole wheat pasta* (*Use brown rice pasta if you have a sensitivity to gluten/wheat like me)

-1/2 c. frozen broccoli (I bought mine … Read More!

Monday Motivation: Getting Back on Track

I don’t know about you, but I pigged out yesterday. Scratch that. I pigged out this entire weekend. Not to mention the fact that I didn’t work out…at all. When you’re a broke gal living in the city, going home is like heaven. It’s free food galore, and I simply can’t help but reap all the delicious benefits of it. Friday and Saturday I behaved mostly, and was healthy 75% of the time, which is good in my book. As you know, I am a firm believer that being healthy is a lifestyle with room to go a little off track from time to time. Having that “wiggle room” is what keeps us sane, after all.

But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t go just a little overboard on Easter Sunday. It definitely doesn’t help when you come from a large Polish family with a grandmother who loves to cook, not to mention is an excellent cook. A family who serves what normal people eat as a main meal as “just the appetizer”, and that by the time dessert comes everyone is holding their stomachs as if they just ate Thanksgiving supper…twice. Yes, that is pretty much my … Read More!
