Happy Hump Day and How to Handle a Blizzard

Seriously ladies. I woke up to this blizzard…

But since I’m training for a half marathon, I didn’t want to skip my run so I decided to trek to the gym. Little did I know, I should have waited it out an hour or two after the stairs and the road had been walked on. The snow was UP TO MY KNEES, nearly TWO feet (I couldn’t even see the staircase). But I hiked through it anyway, stumbling and falling my way to the gym. Eek.

Now, fortunately there are footprints so fellow gym-goers can make it there easy, breezy and pain-free.

Enjoy your snow day ladies…if you’re from New England that is!

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

[source]

As you can tell from the title of my post, today I will be talking about all of my favorite things. However, I now also have that song from  the classic The Sound of Music stuck in my head (and I’m sorry if you now do as well). Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens…OK I’ll stop now. Those most definitely are not a few of my favorite things. I hate cats. But I do have a BUNCH of my very own favorite things and that’s what I’d like to share with you today. Enjoy!

My Favorite Perfume: Asteria by Marina de Bourbon – not only is it in a pretty purple bottle, but I fell in love with the scent the very first day I discovered it. It’s feminine, sexy and sweet all at the same time.

My Favorite Lip Balm: C.O. Bigelow My Favorite Lip Balm, Bath & Body Works – this one is easy as it’s actually called “My Favorite Lip Balm.” My sister got it for me as part of a Christmas gift last year, and I’ve been in love with it ever since. It makes my lips perfectly smooth and shiny, … Read More!

My Date With a Foodie: Live and Learn

[picture courtesy of Bianca from Confessions of a Chocoholic]

Last night I hopped on a T to Harvard Square to go on my very first “Blogger Date.” For those of you who don’t dabble in the world of blogging and twitter, you make many “friends” by means of social media but don’t necessarily ever meet them in real life. You envision whether they’d be funny or mean or stuck up or gorgeous, and ponder about all the many topics you can chit-chat about. However, most often – at least for me – they remain my imaginary online friends.

Last night was different. It was my very first real-life Blogger Date, and I am proud to say Bianca from Confessions of a Chocoholic was the one to take my meet-up V-Card. (thanks, Bianca!) She suggested Russel House Tavern, and I immediately agreed as I’d never been. A date with a foodie, winer, diner and chocolate expert? I was in good hands. Not to mention Bianca’s into health, yoga, traveling and balancing all of that together (boy, did we have a lot to talk about).

However what I enjoyed most about the date was all that I learned. While … Read More!

Quotable Sunday: Diet Food is So Blah

Happy Sunday! Go ahead and indulge today – whether it’s buying a new outfit or eating your little heart out. Today is a day of delish comfort food for me. That entails scrumptious gluten-free pancakes for breakfast with turkey bacon and coffee, and a lovely blogger dinner date with Bianca from Confessions of a Chocoholic tonight. So go ahead, eat up! Diets are overrated (and stupid).

The “Healthy Chick” Turkey Chili Recipe

There’s lots of thing I dislike about the cold: the fact that my nose doesn’t stop running, I need to wear my ugly “sleeping bag” coat to get around, layers are a must, and people just seem altogether crankier than usual are just some of them.

However, there is one thing I love more than anything; and that my friends is chili season. Yes, once the weather gets chilly, I whip out my chili and all is OK in the world.

I’ve tried many-a-chilis in my lifetime from extra-spicy and five bean to shredded chicken and meat lover’s beef. But the one recipe I go back to over and over again is my healthified Turkey Chili. It’s lean and delish with the perfect amount of hotness. Enjoy!

-1 package organic ground turkey

-2 8 oz. cans tomato sauce

-1 14 oz. can crushed tomatoes

-1 large yellow onion, chopped

-1 red pepper, chopped

-1 clove garlic, crushed

-1 can black beans

-1 can corn

-1 jalapeno pepper, diced finely

-2 TB olive oil

-2 TB chili powder

-1 TB cumin

1. Coat large soup pot with olive oil, and cook onion and red peppers on medium heat, stirring frequently. … Read More!

Hump Day Lesson of the Day (For Yesterday)

Oops. All day yesterday, I thought it was Thursday and therefore totally forgot to do my Hump Day Wednesday post. Therefore, since yesterday was Thursday in my mind, today I will pretend it’s Wednesday over here at Healthy Chicks. Alas, here is your Hump Day Lesson of the Day:

Seriously, their wine selection is pretty darn good, and may I add extremely cheap. Yesterday my sister enjoyed a lovely glass of a Trader Joe’s brand California Cabernet. It paired perfectly with our sharp cheddar cheese paired with Onion & Chive seeded crackers. Yum.

That being said, you should feel embarrassed accidentally spilling your roommate’s wine glass and getting red wine all over your white chairs. Oops, my bad. Guess I’m more of a light weight than I thought.

So, Happy Hump Day (Just pretend it is for me, OK?) Read More!

The Most Delish Protein-Packed Omelet You Will Ever Eat

I made this omelet for breakfast this morning because I knew I needed lots of energy today – I had planned an extra-hard workout at the gym, my sister is coming to visit, and welp that may include some shopping (hey, shopping takes a lot out of you). Anyway, enjoy this omelet anytime you need that boost to last ya all afternoon. Also, who says you can’t eat breakfast for dinner? I myself am a HUGE fan.

-2 egg whites, whisked together with a little water

-handful Baby Bella mushrooms, chopped

-handful baby spinach

-1/8 c. red onion, chopped

-few thin slices cheddar cheese

-1/2 c. leftover turkey burger (cooked)

-2 TB fresh salsa, optional

1. Sautee the onions, mushrooms, and spinach in olive oil. Add in the cooked turkey burger crumbles and stir another 30 seconds.

2. Add in the whisked egg whites. Let sit for a minute, flipping the pan to even out the egg mixture. Once cooked, add in your cheese.

3. Once the cheese is melted, flip the omelet and you have the most delicious breakfast of all!

~Serve with a cup of fresh juice or a piece of toast, and hot fresh salsa on the … Read More!

Make Your New Year Resolutions About YOU (Not Your Waist Line)

I know the good ol’ New Year’s resolution post is a little late on my end, but bear with me. I can assure you my  post will be a little different than the usual magazine article on how to drop 20 pounds by 2012, while also quitting smoking and being a “better person” at the same time. No. If you know me and my blog, that’s not what I’m about.

It’s only been three days since the New Year, and I’m already tired of hearing people’s impossible/ridiculous/unhealthy resolutions. “Lose 20 pounds in two months”…”Stop biting my nails”…”Be a nicer person…” “Go to the gym more”…”Eat healthier”. While these are all wonderful, wonderful resolutions I’m worried they don’t stand for what they mean. Lose 20 pounds is going to result in anorexia or a letdown when you realize you can’t nor is it healthy to lose that much weight in so little time. If you’ve bitten your nails your entire life, and have attempted this resolution every other year, why go at something you aren’t serious about nor really believe you can change? Be a nicer person is so vague. What are you going to do? Say thank you a little … Read More!
